About

My mother, Barbara (1938-1996)

I have delightful memories of my mother’s cooking, and that of my two grandmothers. As children, my sister and I ate the best of old-fashioned Midwestern fare, lovingly and expertly prepared by career housewives who took food seriously; women who lived through (or whose mothers lived through) the Great Depression, and knew how to stretch ingredients to make tasty dishes that really stuck to your ribs. Comfort quotient: off the charts.

It is in that spirit that I include many of Mother’s recipes in this blog. After her untimely death in 1996, my sister and I inherited her old recipe files: a treasure trove of fun and interesting ideas, dating back to who-knows-when. And while few would make anyone’s “healthy” list, they are a huge part of my personal history, and yes — I attach emotion to food, so I have mad love for them all! So, maybe you could limit yourself to a once-in-a-while treat, and still enjoy these warm, yummy, satisfying foods.

I wear many hats (some more loosely than others). I’m a high school choir director who writes, cooks and bakes on the side. My children and grandchildren are the joys of my life, and they are, in part, the reason behind this little venture. My patient and long suffering husband, the Thriller, likes this project, too; he gets to eat the goodies.

I plan to revisit all of my mother’s recipes from the 1960s and 70s — as well as recipes from other family members and friends, so get ready — and hopefully do them justice. You’re welcome to do the same, and please do let me know how they comforted you and yours.
